Clicking

Ronnie and Derek respond to a ‘clicking’ noise, as do many other animals, when they’re going to be fed a treat. Watch this below and see how excited they get when they hear the clicking!

Ronnie’s guide to carrying two Rat Nuggets

On Saturday, Ronnie demonstrated how to carry more than one Rat Nugget when you have a small mouth and only one free hand!

Ronnie and Derek had a wash in the bath. Ronnie didn’t mind too much but Derek wasn’t keen, squeaking whenever he was touched. He was fine afterwards though and enjoyed a good scratch!

Feeling the heat

With the heat of the summer arriving, Ronnie and Derek inevitably started to feel extra warm for the first time.

As the inside of their house is probably too hot, one of them (usually Derek) has often been sleeping elsewhere in the cage.

Although rats don’t benefit from fans in the same way as humans (as they don’t sweat), Ronnie and Derek appreciated the cooling effect of a fan which had an ice pack attached to it and was blowing on their cage.

They’ve also been given some ice cubes to eat, and an old jam jar with cool water and ice was put in their cage. Supervised explorations in the garden is another thing they’ve appreciated.

First Day of Spring

Yesterday, Ronnie and Derek enjoyed the first day of astronomical Spring by smelling tree blossom for the first time and springing out of my shirt!

New bedding

Every few days I leave a few pieces of card – from packaging or toilet roll tubes – outside Ronnie and Derek’s house because they like using it for bedding.

Watch Derek pulling the card, piece by piece, into their house! He also starts nibbling one of the pieces – presumably he felt it needed downsizing slightly.
